"This recording registers a singular and magical moment.

The piece was recorded live at the Faï farm in the Hautes-Alpes on June 3th 2016 during the Echos festival. It was the last musical moment of a long series of concerts which started more or less 24 hours earlier. It was around 7.30 pm. The sun passed by the cliff above the farm, drawing a barrier of shadows. This special atmosphere strongly affected the music.

The Faï farm is set under a cliff which work as a gigantic amplification device. The farm is equipped with specific speakers, the "trompes," built and positioned so as to resonate with a natural echo; one works with the bass, one with the medium, and one with the treble.

The Dôme association invited me to this edition of the Echos festival with a singular request : to compose Mantras which would be played in between each performance.

The piece we hear in this recording was conceived as a contrechamp (reverse shot) to the Mantras and for the culmination of the festival. It is made of an improvisation around "Una Filheta de Lion," a traditional song from the south of Massif Central. The song is stretched out to the extreme, almost distended. I played it like a indian raga, from my own perspective. The violin showcases the "color" and I followed with a long melodic expansion with growing density and intensity. I string the verse over around thirty minutes, with a variation of melody and rhythm responding to the echos coming to me from the cliff. The composition melts sound materials with the mantras thus pushing the same continuum to the end of the festival. This concert was a kind of greeting : to the mountain and to the sun, a greeting to the festival, and to those who attended and made it happen."

"Cet enregistrement documente un moment singulier et un peu magique. Le concert a lieu à la ferme du Faï dans les Hautes-Alpes, le 3 juin 2016, pendant le festival Échos. C’est le dernier moment musical d’une longue série de concerts qui à démarré pas loin de 24h plus tôt. Il est autour de 19h30. Le soleil en passant derrière la falaise qui surplombe la ferme, dessine une barrière d’ombre. L’atmosphère particulière de ce moment s’imprimera fortement sur la musique.

La Ferme du Faï est installé en contrebas d’une falaise qui agis comme une gigantesque caisse de résonance. Le Ferme est équipée de hauts parleurs spécifiques, les « Trompes », construites et positionnées pour faire raisonner l’écho naturel ; une pour les basses, une pour les mediums, une pour les aigus. 

L’Association Dôme m’a invité à cette édition du Festival Échos avec une commande singulière : composer des Mantras qui seraient diffusés entre chaque performance.

La pièce que l’on entend ici, été conçue comme un contre-champ aux Mantras et un point d’orgue au festival. Elle consiste en une improvisation autour d’Una Filheta de Lion, chanson traditionnelle du sud du Massif Central. La chanson est étirée à l’extrême et presque dilatée. Je la joue à la façon d’un râga indien, à mon biais : le violon expose la « couleur » et s’en suis un long déploiement mélodique, à la densité et à l’intensité croissante. J’y égraine les couplets sur une trentaine de minutes, variant la mélodie et le rythme en réponse aux échos qui me reviennent de la falaise. La composition partage des matériaux sonores avec les Mantras, faisant ainsi se poursuivre jusqu’au bout du festival un même continuum. Ce concert fut pour moi une manière de salut, salut à la montagne et au soleil, salut au Festival, à ceux qu’il l’on fait exister et à ceux qu’il l’ont traversé."
